The Drumduan is a new trail running event at Cable Bay that will have you running over private land with jaw dropping views of Nelson in the background.
Local Athletics Nelson athletes Amelia Horne and Caitlin Fielder have been selected to represent New Zealand at the 2023 World Mountain & Trail Running Championships in June, this is a fundraiser event to help and support them getting there.
With a long and short course option you won't want to miss out on this event!
Do you have what it takes to run The Drumduan 21km Mountain Run course?
This is a tough course and recommended for experienced trail and mountain runners only. With over 1200 meters of elevation, stream crossings, long climbs, technical ups and downs and ever changing terrain the 21km Mountain Run will surely challenge.
Due to the nature and toughness of the 21km course there will be no walking category and a cutoff time of 6 hours. We will also require you to take the following gear, this will be checked at Registration before the event.
Small First Aid kit with strapping tape
Long sleeve merino or thermal top (can be worn), hat and gloves
Seam sealed jacket
Cellphone with the Race directors phone number
Whistle
We recommend you bring 1 litre of water, Tailwind or electrolyte
The 21km is a self-supported course, with one aid station when you drop down to the Glen (at about 9.5kms). The Woolshed aid station will have Tailwind nutrition, water, Proper Crisps and some snacks.
The course will be well marked, we will have some Marshals out there and a Tail-end runner.

I’ve been running for about 8 years and whilst this time has had its fair share of injuries and time away from running, my love for the sport has never waned. I grew up tramping and trail running has been a natural progression allowing me to explore further with a lighter pack and with the bonus of coming home to sleep in the comfort of my own bed. I moved to Nelson a year and a half ago and have been stoked with the vast terrain there is to explore. One of my favourite runs in the area would have to be my commute to work which takes me over the Grampians - I make sure to spend a couple minutes at the viewing platform to take in the view.
The world champs will be my first international race and my fourth running race. To summarise my feelings in a couple of words I would say I’m scared but excited. I’ve been managing a foot injury recently which has been challenging and has given me a different build up than I had expected and hoped for. Accepting that this is the case, my goal for Europe is to be on the start line in the healthiest shape I can be, to race with hunger and to ultimately enjoy and learn from the experience.
My name is Caitlin Fielder, I am a trail runner for Salomon, and full time artist with my own business. Running has provided me with the opportunity to explore and see the world in ways that I otherwise couldn't have. It also helps immensely in my work, feeding my creativity and imagination. My favourite trail distances to race are around 40-60km, and I love a fast flowy downhill.
At World Championships I will be competing in the short distance trail race, which is 44.6km +3100m. I'm aiming for a top 10 finish there, with the dream of a top 5. It will be an incredibly competitive field, which will be a great opportunity for me to measure myself against the worlds best.
